Easy South Indian Sambar

                Sambar is a traditionally South Indian Cuisine recipe. It is served as breakfast or as lunch and dinner with Upma, Dosa, Idli, Uttapam, etc. It may make twice in a day. It is a main course of South Indian Cuisine.
                It is just like stew made from toor dal (split pigeon peas). Sambar is basically made from toor dal, tamrind paste and vegetables.
                It is very easy to make. There are many variant in making sambar. Vegetable sambar is also very popular.  Mostly drum sticks, bringal (eggplant), okra, potatoes, carrots, etc. vegetables are used. Just boil them in water for 5-7 minute and you can add them into sambar after sautéing onion and tomato. Shallot onions are mostly used in sambar. But if you do not have these, you can add any type of onions.
                Learn how to make easy South Indian Sambar recipe at home. Here is step by step process of South Indian Sambar recipe which is like restaurant style.

Ingredients:

                Toor dal – 1 cup boiled
                Oil – 2 tbs
                Mustard seeds – ½ ts
                Asafetida – pinch
                Dry red chili - 1
                Onion – 2 chopped
                Tomato – 1 chopped
                Curry leaves – 6-7
                Coriander – 2 tbs
                Tamarind   - 1 tbs
                Red chili powder – 1 ts
                Turmeric powder – ¼ ts
                Coriander powder – 1 tbs
                Cumin powder – ½ tbs
                Salt - to taste
                Sāmbhar masala powder – 2 tbs
                Water

Method:

1.       Soak tamarind in ½ glass of water for 1 hour, then remove seeds and grind well then sieve it.
2.       Heat oil in a pan.
3.       Add mustard seeds when sputtering add asafetida.
4.       Add curry leaves and dry red chili.
5.       Add onion and sauté till golden color.
6.       Add tomato, cook till soft.
7.       Add tamarind water.
8.       Add 1 tbs Sāmbhar masala powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder and mix well till oil separated.
9.       Add toor dal and 1 glass of water.
10.   Add red chili powder, coriander, 1 tbs Sāmbhar masala and salt; mix well.
11.   Boil for 10 to 15 minutes.
12.   Spicy SAMBHAR is ready to serve hot.

Serving Tip:

It is served with Upma, Idli, Dosa, Uttapam, Vada, and Rice or with any South Indian Snacks.
